The Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) will open the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park in September 2009. This 100-acre park will become the largest museum contemporary art park in U.S. and will focus on the interrelationships between art and nature. Right now, you can explore the park’s many trails through wetlands and wooded areas. The Art part will have to wait until September.

Historic Archaeology of the Falls of the Ohio Region exhibit is now on display at Falls of the Ohio Interpretive Center. Late 1700s and mid-1900s artifacts will be on display include pottery, coins, beads, glass bottles and more. The collection is vast and has not been exhibited all together before now. The exhibit runs through March 31. So, you better hurry!

After exploring the exhibit, head outside to explore the fossilized beds along the Ohio River.

Here’s a great way to have fun and support a good cause. Februrary 23-26, grab a tube and hit the slopes at Perfect North Slopes near Lawrenceburg. They’ll donate $1 to Tour for the Cure(R) for each regular tubing ticket purchased.

Take the plunge on Saturday, Feb. 21 from the boat dock. Registration begins at 11:30 am with the plunge at 1 pm. After you dry off, explore Indiana’s second largest state park.

The nice snowy weather of the past few weeks made for a great play day at Perfect North Slopes. Beyond skiing, the facility offers tubing, which is a great substitute if the slopes are packed. Located on the west end of the property, there are about 15 lanes, split between two hills – tall and short. Try out the short ones, but, I suggest you work your way to top, they’re a better ride. During the slow times, we were able to do some racing. We linked as many as three tubes together in a couple of lanes and down we went. It was a great time!

No snow? When the tempature gets cold enough, they make their own….So, Go!

Judging from the cars filing into Eagle Creek Park, the place was packed on a recent Saturday visit. And yet, I think I may have seen more deer than people. Tucked away on the northwest side of Indianapolis, Eagle Creek Park’s size and layout allows it to be popular without being overpopulated. I traveled there to run. The natural setting provided a nice change of scenery and the handful of certified road courses made tracking my miles a bit easier. Seeing wildlife up close was a bonus. Several deer along my route simply stood by and chewed fallen leaves as I passed just a few feet away. Usually it’s the deer that are running and the people that watch. After a successful run, I made a stop at nearby Traders Point Creamery for a treat. Milk may seem an odd choice for a thirst quencher, but it works for the winning drivers at the Indy 500 each year. Besides, it was more about the reward than the recovery. The deer and should-be-world-famous chocolate milk made the run well worth the early morning effort.
